Most Popular Questions

Where do we start?
First start with the cemetery to select a suitable site, giving some thought to their Height regulations and the surrounding memorials for ideas. Then call to arrange a meeting or request a free quote from J&T Smith Stonemasons.
What is Granolite?
Granolite is a combination of granite crushed to a dust and mixed with cement.
Will my floor have an uneven surface?
Some projects are suited to uneven surfaces whilst others require a smooth finish which is achieved by using stone that has been honed. Naturally split material is very popular for use in areas where a non-slip surface is required. It is especially popular on outside areas such as patios, steps, pool surrounds and driveway applications. There are processes that can be applied to the surface of the material to give it a more uniform and luxurious appearance such as honing.
What colour granite is best?
When thinking of a headstone the darker the colour the more the inscription lettering will stand out, for example Black granite with gold gilded letters will appear brighter than if it was cut to a light grey granite.
Where is can I use natural stone?
Natural Stone can be used external, internal. Cladding, bathroom wall and floor, kitchen bench top, fire place, columns, driveway, footpath, staires, shopping centres, commercial and residential projects.
Will stone surfaces survive a fire?
Natural stone is impervious to fire and will lower the risk of fire damage in any building - it would be nice if it lowered your insurance premium as well - but it rarely does!
How many stone slabs will my benchtop need to use?
At final check measure, our stonemasons will create a stencil of your benchtop to accurately measure and plan the layout. Like a good game of Tetris, they will try to make the best use of space by arranging the pieces snuggly onto the slab area. If we can fit the pieces onto one slab instead of two, we will, as this will save you money and reduce product wastage.
Where will the joins be and will they be noticeable?
We always try to make best use of the stone slabs, keeping the need for joins to a minimum without compromising the integrity of the stone piece. Our stonemasons are highly skilled at joining, book matching and mixing precise glue colours so that your joins are virtually undetectable.
